Lauren Shuler, P.E., IBCLC

Board Certified Lactation Consultant, Racial Equity Facilitator, Professional Engineer, Parent

Welcome! My name is Lauren Shuler, and I'm the founder of Nourishing Tiny Humans.

Parenting feels like drinking out of a fire hose these days (thanks internet!) I'm an avid researcher and consumer of evidence, and I love distilling it down into a more consumable form. Along the way I've developed a passion for helping other parents navigate the plethora of information out there on pregnancy, birth, postpartum, feeding, lactation, and parenting in general. I whole-heartedly believe that intuition, feelings, and evidence are not mutually exclusive.

As a board certified lactation consultant (IBCLC), I have a particular love for lactation and infant feeding. It is such a huge part of our first year as humans (and as caretakers to those tiny humans), but it also plays such an important long-term role in the physical and mental health of parent and baby. Unfortunately many of us have lost the cultural knowledge of lactation, and many folks go into the experience fearful or with limited information. I am passionate about giving parents support, education, and confidence in meeting their chest/breastfeeding goals, whatever those may be.

I firmly believe we should all have access to culturally competent and compassionate care. As a cisgender, heterosexual, white woman, I recognize that I come to the table with immense privilege. I know I experience the world differently than many of the folks who I serve. In an effort to dismantle my bias and provide better care, I continually participate in trainings lead by and focused on LGBTQIA+ and BIPOC cultural competency and care. I am committed to listening to the experiences of others so I can better use my privilege to help deconstruct systemic racism in the healthcare space (and beyond). That said, I also recognize that it is nice to see yourself in the person who is serving you. If you would prefer to have someone who more closely reflects your identity, please don't hesitate to ask, and I'll make every effort to provide a referral.

Some more about me -- I love a good piece of dark chocolate, building things with my family, and general adventuring. In addition to my passion for lactation, I am the mom to two kids, former foster parent, racial equity co-facilitator, volunteer victim advocate, and a professional engineer. Foster parenting in particular gave me deep humility and compassion for the complexity of humans and taught me to be flexible in accommodating the immense differences and experiences we each bring to the table.

I truly do believe we're all doing the best we can with what we have.

I look forward to making you feel safe, supported, and educated as you to make the transition to parenting your first or beyond.
